Education & Mentoring
Alongside my professional design practice, I have had the privilege of teaching the next generation of designers at university level. It has become one of the most rewarding chapters of my career.
After more than forty years working across residential, commercial, exhibition and landscape design, teaching provides an opportunity to give something back to a profession that has given me so much. It allows me to share not only technical knowledge, but also the practical experience, creative thinking and problem-solving skills that can only be gained through years of professional practice.
Design education is constantly evolving. While the fundamental principles of proportion, spatial planning, light, materials and creativity remain unchanged, today's students are also embracing emerging technologies such as digital visualisation and artificial intelligence. I believe these technologies should enhance creativity, never replace it. The ability to think, sketch, communicate ideas and solve problems will always remain at the heart of great design.
Teaching keeps me connected to new ideas and fresh perspectives, while my continued professional practice ensures that everything I teach is grounded in the realities of the design industry.
The relationship works both ways—practice informs education, and education continually inspires practice.
Watching students develop confidence, discover their own design voice and progress into successful careers is immensely rewarding. Knowing that I have played a small part in that journey is one of the greatest privileges of my profession.
After four decades, I still wake up excited by design.
Teaching simply gives me the opportunity to share that passion with the next generation.
